CHANCE THE RAPPER PUTS FAMILY FIRST ON NEW DJ PREMIER-PRODUCED SONG ‘TOGETHER’

Chance The Rapper has teamed up with the legendary DJ Premier for his new single — and it comes equipped with an important message.

Released on Tuesday (May 14), “Together” is the latest offering from the Chicago rapper’s upcoming project Star Line.

On the song, Chance preaches the importance of family and community while reflecting on his own upbringing in nostalgic detail.

“We used to watch ‘Annie, are you okay?’ on the couch/ My cousin used to slam me ’til I punched him in the mouth/ My auntie used to cook for 20 people every week/ My uncle in the basement even if they never speak,” he raps, highlighting the beauty and warmth in dysfunction.

However, the second verse reveals the true intent behind the track as the activist MC calls for housing justice in his hometown of Chicago.

“This the homebase, you gotta watch ’em, they’ll right time you at the wrong place/ If you on your celly phone more than a phone case, they’ll take your crib to go, slide on your home plate/ We need CBA, CBA, CBA, Barry/ Before they build another golf course, library/ Or send an eminent domain to Miss Mary/ It’s gonna get scary, young Jeffery, young Larry,” he spits.

Emphasizing this message, Chance wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “This is a song about housing justice painted with nostalgia. I hope the memories can elevate the core message rather than bury it.”

Anchoring the song is a distinctly boom bap beat from DJ Premier, who flips the same sample he used on fellow Windy City lyricist Common‘s classic 2000 song “The 6th Sense.”

“Together” also closes out with scratches of Common’s vocals from that song, bringing the whole thing full circle.

Chance, who serves as a judge on NBC’s The Voice, also performed “Together” for the first time during Tuesday night’s episode of the show.

“Together” follows the release of “Buried Alive” in April, which saw Chance The Rapper touching on his recent divorce and legal dispute with his ex-manager.

“Where’s his money now? Wherе his wife at?/ Where his managеr? Where his hype at?/ Then they threw the dirt on the casket,” he rapped on the song.

Star Line will serve as the long-awaited follow-up to Chano’s debut studio album The Big Day, which arrived to mixed reviews in 2019.

Fueling excitement for his return, the Grammy-winner called Star Line one of his “proudest” projects in an interview last year.

“It’s one of my proudest projects in terms of writing and artistic vision,” he said during an appearance on Audacy Check In. “There’s an immense amount of work to be done with it.

“But it’s cool ‘cause I feel like with the love and intentionality that goes into making each physical art piece gives me an opportunity to show people in these museum spaces what I’m working on as I go, the highs and the lows, kind of like a preview to the project.”

In addition to “Together,” Chance The Rapper has also announced a listening party for Star Line. The event is called “Writings on the Wall” and takes place on Saturday evening (May 18) in Los Angeles.

He also posted a phone number, 312 494 1081, on Instagram through which fans can receive more details about the event.

André 3000 released his debut solo album New Blue Sun in November, while Common has been hard at work crafting a joint project with Pete Rock.

The Chicago rap veteran recently fueled excitement for the project by claiming it’s among his top five albums.

“Y’all gon’ think I’m just talking, but this new Pete Rock joint,” he said at a conference last month. “I’ma see y’all when I come back, whenever I’m back, and y’all can tell me if I’m bullshittin’ or not. It’s in my top,” he said.

“I’ve had a couple people coming in saying, ‘Yo, this is one of your best albums.’ So I’m excited about it.”

Common also previously revealed that the album is inspired by ’90s Hip Hop.

“I been listening to a lot of ’90s Hip Hop because I been creating a new project,” he said on MSNBC’s The Beat With Ari Melber in September.

“I’m working on a new album with Pete Rock and just, the energy of that music, whether it’s Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest, or De La Soul, because they just got their music on streaming, it’s been inspiring to hear. But I am creating new music right now. I’m in a great space.”

JAMIE FOXX-PRODUCED LUTHER VANDROSS DOC LANDS AT CNN FILMS & OWN

The Jamie Foxx-produced Luther Vandross documentary, Never Too Much, has found a home at CNN Films and OWN, who will be broadcasting the documentary in 2025.

IndieWire revealed that the acquisition was completed on Wednesday (May 15) after the film debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Though an official premiere date has not yet been set, the outlet confirms that Never Too Much will go to the Max streaming platform after its debut on CNN Films and OWN.

“I’m thrilled to partner again with CNN Films and OWN to bring this film to audiences,” director Dawn Porter said in a statement to the outlet. “Luther’s music is timeless, his legacy is unsurpassed, and we can’t wait for all of his fans new and old to experience his brilliance.”

Foxx’s Foxhole Productions is listed as one of the production companies on the film, alongside Raindog Films, and in association with Trilogy Films.

The Oscar winner’s participation in the film was first announced back in July 2023.

Foxx — through his entertainment company Foxxhole Productions and Colin Firth’s Raindog Films — will be producing the film while Dawn Porter will serve as director. Sony Music Entertainment’s (SME) Premium Content Division, and Sony Music Publishing will be involved as well.

“Luther is one of our G.O.A.T.s,” Foxx said in a statement at the time. “He’s one of the greatest singers in the history of music. It is truly an honor to be a part of the team to help bring this incredible story to the masses.”

“Like so many, I have always loved Luther’s music, but I had no idea of the breadth and scope of his artistry,” said Porter, according to the outlet. “I think people will be surprised at how much he accomplished in his tragically short life. It is a joy to be able to share his true story.”

There is also a biopic in the works based on Vandross’ only biographical book, Luther: The Life and Longing of Luther Vandrosswhich was written by veteran music journalist Craig Seymour.

Luther Vandross was one of the greatest R&B singers in music history. The eight-time Grammy Award winner is best known for his iconic records such as, “Never Too Much,” “Here and Now,” and “Dance With My Father.”

His music has been sampled throughout Hip Hop, most famously by Kanye West and Twista on 2004’s “Slow Jamz.”
